Going Solar

The Loft Cinema has gone solar in more ways than one:
After previously working with TFS to create a solar powered mobile cinema van, the Loft is now harnessing the sun with a new 95kW system that will provide shaded parking for guests of the theater while generating 150,000kWh’s of clean energy annually.

"This is something we'd been internally motivated to do for several years; making the actual switch came down to timing and finding the right kind of situation as a nonprofit. The primary factor, way at the top of the list, was the environmental impact of solar power, but covered parking and the economic benefits certainly factored in as well.

We live in a city with 286 sunny days per year, and yet solar panels aren't nearly as prevalent as they could be. As an organization with sustainability as a core value, it is obviously important to The Loft Cinema, but it should be important to all of us. It would be great to see Tucson as a city take a leadership role in this crucial effort to better our world.

The folks at Technicians for Sustainability were a dream to work with. Not only are they incredibly knowledgeable and really good at what they do, they're also friendly, responsive, and can easily break down relatively complex concepts into layman's terms. I'd recommend that any business interested in making the switch contact TFS yesterday!"

Mobile Solar Cinema Van

Peggy Johnson, Executive Director of Loft Cinema, spent years dreaming of having the ability to bring art films, documentaries, and classic cinema to communities without convenient access to an independent movie theater, introducing a new audience to an art form that they may not otherwise be exposed to.

That dream of accessible, on-the-move cinema has now been fully realized with Loft’s new solar-powered mobile cinema, the first of its kind to debut in the US. The van utilizes a 1.24 kW solar electricity installation, comprised of 4 LG 315 W modules, paired with an off-grid inverter and battery array, installed by Technicians For Sustainability, allowing the van to store energy generated during day-time hours for evening operation, inflating the screen and projecting up to 3 hours of film and audio.

Loft’s solar-powered mobile cinema now travels to neighborhoods throughout the Southwest and beyond, and has become a regular staple at festivals and other outdoor events in Tucson, enabling a simple solution for on-the-fly screenings of cinematic and multimedia experiences to audiences of unlimited attendance.
