Sustainable Tucson General MeetingDecember 9, 2009, 5:45 - 8:10 PM

The General Meeting of Sustainable Tucson will be held in the Joel Valdez Main Library, Downtown, 101 N Stone Ave.

The meeting will profile three local and sustainable cooperatives, with a theme of “Co-operating for Sustainability.” The Watershed Management Group, the Green Retrofit Co-op and the Gardening Co-op at the Food Bank’s Community Food Resource Center will be featured. Representatives of each group will present information on their programs and be available to answer your questions. The general public is welcome.

There should be a little something for everyone at this important meeting. Come prepared to engage with the issues, ideas, and opportunities we plan to provide.

Do it in the dirt! Sunday, January 10th, 12 - 2 PM Workshop on how to effectively grow your on food in desert conditions. Includes: planting techniques, how to increase soil fertility for better tasting fruits and vegetables, higher yields, and nutrient content. Effective composting, vermiculture (worm composting), mulches, manures, organic soil amendments and soil organisms.

City Chicken Coop Tour

December 5, 2009 - 2nd Annual City Chicken Coop Tour, TucsonLearn about raising backyard chickens in the desert. From 10 AM to 3 PM participants in this self-guided tour can travel around town visiting designated backyards with resident poultry. On the tour, a wide variety of coops with be on display representing different sized flocks, unique coop designs, and a wide variety of coop construction materials. Owners of the coops will be on hand to answer questions about keeping chickens. Tickets for the tour cost $5 and all $5 from each ticket will be donated to a worthy local non-profit. This cistern installation fit into the preschool curriculum at Southwest, which includes learning about native plants and animals, gardening, and water harvesting.

This Tucson non-profit boasts five culvert cisterns which feed into an automated irrigation system.

Cooper Center for Environmental Learning

TFS crew partnered with TUSD plumbers to install a cistern connected to a pump which brings rainwater into their bathhouse to flush Camp Cooper's toilets.

Burns Wald-Hopkins Shambach Architects

This architecture firm in a historic district of downtown Tucson chose to install a cistern and rainwater harvesting landscaping to both mitigate a flooding problem and irrigate a lush desert landscape.

Enphase Inverters - Central Tucson Residence

These Tucson residents installed a photovoltaic system because it felt good to help the environment.
