GABA Bike Swap

On Sunday, April 17th from 6am - 1pm, the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association is hosting a bike swap.  Come to the largest bike swap in the west on 4th Avenue between 6th St and 9th St t get great feals on bicycles, parts, and gear.  Visit www.bikegaba.org for more information. Bike Tour of the Tucson Mountains

On Saturday, April 16th, celebrate springtime by biking the Tucson Mountains. Open to all ages and abilities, the Tour offers 73 and 27-mile distances, plus Fun Rides of 4 & 1/4 mile events. The 73-mile event is a perimeter ride around – not over – the beautiful Tucson Mountains.  All routes begin at Marana Town Hall in Marana, AZ and are generally flat, perfect for beginning riders! For more information and to register visit Perimeter Bicycling Association at www.perimeterbicycling.com or call 745-2033. Rides will begin at 6:30am, 8:30am and 10:30am depending on level of difficulty.

Earth Day Festival & Parade

Join the fun at 17th annual Earth Day Festival and Parade on April 16th at Reid Park, near Country Club and 22nd Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Participate in hands-on activities at booths and view an alternative fuel vehicle show and a solar competition. Bike to the Zoo Day

On Saturday, September 16th, ride your bike to Reid Park Zoo and show your helmet to get FREE admission and FREE valet parking inside the zoo.  The Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (GABA) will have rides starting from various locations around Tucson, in varying distances and speeds.  You decide which level and distance you want to pedal, and start with the group that most closely matches your cycling preference. All rides will converge at the zoo between 9 AM and 12 PM. Upon arrival at the zoo, stop at the GABA table with your helmet which will be set up inside of the entrance to get your ice cream cone/cup voucher (limited to the first 300 cyclists). Free valet bike parking will be available, through the GABA, inside the Reid Park Zoo for everyone who rides. Bike parking offered 9 AM to 3:30 PM.  Visit www.bikegaba.org for more information.

University of Arizona Earth Day Sustainability Forum

Tucson Clean and Beautiful is hosting its first annual Spring Greening event, with multiple opportunities for the community to learn about and participate in Tucson Clean & Beautiful environmental efforts including volunteer litter cleanup and buffelgrass removal; tree maintenance demonstrations; recycling education and collection of cell phones, printer cartridges, aluminum cans and # 1 plastic bottles. The event is free, and those who come can enter raffles to win a multitude of gift certificates to different local Tucson businesses.

Eat More Pie: Pie Baking Contest and Pie Party

Dust off your favorite recipe book and get rolling! There will be four judged categories (enter one or enter them all!), fantastic prizes, and more delicious home-made pie than you have ever seen.  Each pie you enter into the contest is an opportunity to support your favorite Tucson non-profit organization, who will receive all of the event proceeds if you win the contest!  Click here for details on this year's party.  Following the baking contest, all of the pies will be sliced open, and the "Pie Partying" will ensue. Slices will be sold for $3 each or $5/two slices. Come help us eat more pie!

Solar Power 101: A Community Education Series on Solar Energy

The Office of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Pima County Public Library present Solar Power 101: A Community Education Series on Solar Energy.  There will be presentations made on the following topics: -       Environment Arizona: Environment Arizona focuses on protecting Arizona's air, water and open spaces through independent research and advocacy. 2nd St. School Solar Installation

On April 2nd, TFS will be installing Solar Panels on top of the Second St. School in historic Sam Hughes.  Not only will the kids get a clean energy education, but parents and college students are going to lend a hand with the installation.  Come stop by in the morning or early afternoon to watch an installation in progress and see your local community joined together to create a brighter future for the next generation! Solar Rock

The 5th annual Solar Rock, an outdoor, solar-powered concert will take place on Sunday, March 27, at Armory Park from 11am - 4pm.  The concert is 100% powered by solar panels and is open to the public.  Tucson citizens concerned about the state of the environment can attend and learn more about the power of the sun from educational displays, renowned scientists and vendors.  Come join TFS as we enjoy the sun, music and fun!  For more information, please visit the Solar Rock web page.  This year, the Solar Rock will coincide with Cyclovia!

Cyclovia

Cyclovia aims to get people out of their cars and enjoying the streets by foot or bike for one day.  This year it coincides with the Solar Rock on March 27th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Cyclovia is open to the public and follows the map to the right.  If you would like to volunteer or become a sponsor, please visit the Cyclovia website. The term Cyclovia refers to the closing of streets to cars to facilitate cycling, walking and having fun in the street!  It is time to toss a football with friends in the street and participate in this local event!

GreenFest 2011

Come visit TFS at this year's GreenFest, presented by Bookmans and the Saguaro Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona at the Tucson Village Farm on April 2nd from 10 am - 2:00 pm. The GreenFest is free to the public and will provide valuable information to anyone interested in 'greening' their life.  Come learn more about solar energy systems, composting, water harvesting, xeriscaping, green building, participate in family friendly activities, and there will be opportunities to win great prizes.  To learn more about this event, visit the GreenFest website.

National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk

The National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk is taking place on April 2nd, starting at Tucson Electric Park.  All proceeds help to support and fund research on mental illnesses.  Check-in time for the walk is at 7:30 am, with the walk starting at 9:00 am. TFS will join Gabrielle Giffords' Cactus Roots Connectors team to raise money and awareness for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southern Arizona. Gabby served as the chair for NAMISA’s walk last year, and has always been a strong supporter of their work to advocate for world-class treatment for people with mental illness. Pennington Street Block Party

Join TFS in celebrating our youth and our community. The 3rd annual Pennington Street Block Party on Saturday, April 9 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. The Block Party is a family-friendly event in the heart of Downtown Tucson that celebrates what young people are doing to make our community a better place. Fun for all ages: musical performances and teaching demos, interactive booths, one-act plays, art installations and ‘moveable’ galleries, carnival games, and more!

The event showcases youth creativity, learning, and service, and will launch Southern Arizona’s celebration of Global Youth Service Days. This year’s Block Party coincides with the vibrant 2nd Saturdays Downtown event, so all of downtown Tucson will be alive throughout the evening and into the night.

17th Annual Earth Day Festival

The 17th Annual Earth Day Festival is happening on April 16th at Reid Park from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.  There will be a Parade, Solar Competition and Alternative Fuels Car Show as well as exhibits, music, performances and food vendors.  Also, ride your bike to the Reid Park Zoo and get FREE admission when you show your safety helmet. Common Ground Monthly Celebration

Multi-Generational Core Intro to Kingian Nonviolence

The Nonviolence Legacy Project offers training programs in Tucson and, on April 9th and 16th from 10 am to 5 pm, they are offering  an introduction to Kingian Nonviolence for both youth and adults.  This two-day training covers information about nonviolence as a courageous way of life and a powerful strategy for social change.  Participants will read and discuss Pilgrimage to Nonviolence and Letter from a Birmingham Jail and learn to apply Dr. King's six principles and six steps of nonviolence to their life and human rights issues of our time.  For more information, please visit the Culture of Peace Alliance website. Women of Tibet: "The Great Mother" & "A Quiet Revolution"

Join the Loft in celebrating the 100th Centenary of International Women's Day for a screening of the award winning films "The Great Mother" and "A Quiet Revolution." On Wednesday, March 9th, 2011, these films will be presented at the Loft Cinema.  The first film documents the life story of the mother of the Dalai Lama, Dekyi Tsering.  The second film tells the story of 15,000 unarmed Tibetan women who assembled on March 12, 1959, in one of the greatest nonviolent protests in modern history, against the Communist Chinese.  The protest itself allowed the Dalai Lama to escape by providing a diversion.
